    About Golf in Wales

The Welsh golf landscape is often overlooked with the quantity and quality of courses in the Great Britain and Ireland region. However, a golf tour through Wales will challenge your ability and satisfy your expectations. Wales is home to over 200 courses with the first appearing in the late 1800’s. Test your skills on a Ryder Cup venue (the Twenty Ten course at Celtic Manor), see if you can handle famous Royal Porthcawl or simply get blown away by the views of Royal St. David’s. A golf tour through Wales is not one you’ll want to miss and Back Nine Golf Tours will ensure that you experience it all!

    Conwy

Its seaside character, the presence of the bay, the mountains and the Great Orme above Llandudno all set a spectacular backdrop for this test of golf. Although fairly flat, the course offers sufficient variety and avoids monotony of some lesser links courses.

    Conwy
  • North Wales

Situated across from Conwy, North Wales is located on Llandudno’s lovely West Shore, the outward nine run along the rail line, then back along the shore, with small and tricky greens throughout.

  • Nefyn & District (Old)

Three distinct 9 hole loops at Nefyn located on the cliff tops at the foot of the Porthdinllaen headland. The old course combines the Front and Old nines to create the premier configuration. Blind drives, strategically placed bunkers, Thick rough and the ever present wind are all factors to contend with. This is Wales answer to Ireland’s Old Head.

    Royal St. David's

With views of Harlech castle, the bay of Tremadog and across to the lesser peaks of Snowdonia, Royal St. David’s is beautiful as well as challenging. With holes zig-zagging in all directions each shot is subject to the prevailing westerly winds making it the toughest par 69 according to locals.

    Aberdovey

Wedged between the Cambrian Mountain range and the shore this traditional out and back links course resides next to an old Railway line. Not the shortest or hardest course in the British Isles but when the wind blows the punishing rough challenges even the best golfers.

    Aberdovey
  • Bull Bay

The Northernmost course in Wales, Bull Bay was constructed on a cliff top site. On more than half the holes the green is above the eye line as your approach shot is played, leaving a certain amount of uncertainty. Most tee boxes are elevated as well, inviting a full blooded drive, but be cautious as wayward shots will find the gorse and be severely punished.

    Bull Bay
  • Borth & Ynyslas

Often described as a great but often ignored Welsh masterpiece. A traditional out and back links course, with tight fairways and the Borth Breeze be prepared to test your game at one of Wales oldest courses.

    Pennard

One of the oldest courses in Wales it is also one of the most hilly, with more ups and downs than most links courses. Expect a few blind shots as well as cattle grazing on the links as you weave near the 12th century Norman Castle.

    Pennard Golf Club
  • Royal Porthcawl

Off the beaten path and relatively unknown Royal Porthcawl offers traditional links golf as well as amazing views as elevations rise to show views across the Bristol Channel. The course is fully exposed to the wind and it’s non traditional, out and back layout, challenges you as holes loop back on one another allowing the wind to play a major role.

    Pyle & Kenfig

Breathtaking views of Welsh mountains, Rest Bay and the Bristol Channel can be seen from this old links course. Unusual for a links course P&K is laid out in two 9 hole loops. The back 9 is a very stiff test, especially when the wind is up. Great shot making will be rewarded at P&K, it’s a fair course without any unforeseen tricks up its sleeve. We guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy this overshadowed gem.

    Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club
  • Southerndown

Southerndown’s elevated height high above the Ogmore River Valley offers amazing views across the Bristol Channel and down on Porthcawl. A completely natural course with no trees or artificial water hazards, you will encounter bracken, gorse and pot bunkers while still battling the wind and sheep.

    Southerndown Golf Club
  • Celtic Manor (Twenty Ten)

The first course to be built specifically for Ryder Cup play and the first course in Wales to host the Ryder Cup, Celtic Manor isn’t a “traditional” course you would expect in the British Isles. With water hazards on more than half of it’s holes Twenty Ten offers plenty of risk-and-reward challenges.

    Celtic Manor
  • St. Pierre (Old Course)

A lake covering more than 10 acres poaches many golf balls while mature sentry trees wait to stymie the errant tee shot. The course is hardly a pushover at over 7,000 yards and has hosted many British Masters tournaments as well as the 1996 Solheim Cup.

    Ashburnham

One of the oldest and finest golf courses in all of Wales, Ashburnham is a nightmare for those with a right handed slice. The first two and last two holes are out of character from the traditional undiluted and undulating links style course. On the outward side by hole 3 you are parallel to the sea and often into the teeth of a prevailing wind.

    Ashburnham Golf Club
  • Tenby

The charming classic links is situated on the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast, affording superb views across one of Britain's most fascinating and holiest islands, Caldey Island. The oldest course in Wales offers nothing modern but challenges golfers with numerous blind shots, hard and fast contoured greens, snaking hogs back fairways, dense gorse, cruel pot bunkers and rugged dunes. It is one of the finest and least well known courses in the whole of the British Isles.

    Tenby Golf Club
  • Machynys Peninsula

Seen by many as the best new course built in Britain in 2005. The course is routed in two distinct loops with a parkland front nine and an inward half that has more of a links feel beside the sea. Situated beside the Wild Fowl and Wetlands Trust at Penclacwydd and Millenium Coastal Park guarantees Machynys Peninsula as a must play venue in Wales

  • 2nd time to Scotland - Back Nine Golf Tours was able to plan a nice trip that included a lot of courses we didn't play the first time while keeping the favorites in our tour (Old Course, Kingsbarns, Royal Troon). Really looking forward to a trip to England to play the "Royals".
